Hi Ben,
Yes, Ed Towt was my father.
I believe that my father enlisted in
1942, he turned 19 that February, so I believe that he was a
freshman at Cornell University. He claimed that he would have
been drafted anyway, so he figured that he would enlist. He
indeed was in the 643rd, company B. One tank crew mate of his
was Thomas Devine, from Nantucket, MA. I do not know the names
of the other crew members. However, he and his crew were awarded
a bronze star on June 18, 1945 for driving directly into, and
taking out, a German mortar barrage in the Battle of the Bulge,
as per the listing on the 643rd website (https://www.bensavelkoul.nl/
I assume that the picture of the three GIs were some of his crew mates. ---› Jim James Towt |
