DSC Citation

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Military Police Corps) Clair Hall Thurston, Sr. (ASN: 0-350185), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Provost Marshall, Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany. During the period 7 to 13 March 1945, in the vicinity of Remagen, Germany, Major Thurston fearlessly exposed himself to enemy artillery fire and air attack in order to direct and maintain the traffic over the vital Ludendorf Bridge. Although previously wounded by a shell fragment he heroically rushed across the bridge on food during a heavy air bombardment and carried to safety a man dazed from concussion. His cool, courageous actions inspired personnel to continue crossing in the face of devastating enemy fire. Major Thurston's dauntless leadership and gallantry are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States
