He enlisted in the Army in August 1940. Becoming frustrated after two years at a desk job in England, Pete requested a transfer to the front lines. He was in Germany within weeks. Capt. McNabb was involved in many important conflicts, including "The Battle of the Bulge".

While in command of unit 643C, Lt. McNabb and his company were the first to reach the Rhine River. His friend, Lt. Jewell of the 3rd. platoon, was in the first tank of that unit to reach the river. The two men were photo featured in Life Magazine for this accomplishment. Capt. McNabb spent 192 days of continuing combat during this conflict. He returned to the States in December 1945. He had earned the Bronze Star and four combat stars. He was a man of great dedication to and pride in his flag and country.
